This ginormously huge bracelet honors the once plentiful buffalo whose herds were so numerous and large two hundred years ago that the plains were often solid brown and the ground shook for miles when they were on the move. Native American tribes in the central and high plains hunted the buffalo but killed only as many as were needed for food and the wealth of other necessities they provided. They were revered to such an extent that the buffalo hunters often said prayers praising the buffalo before the hunt and all said prayers thanking the buffalo after a successful hunt. This was the way for hundreds if not thousands of years until the white hunters came with their wealthy eastern and European customers who killed thousands of buffalos for sport and then left their carcasses to rot on the prairie. Kit Carson, for example, may be a romantic western figure to many but his name is reviled by many Native Americans for what he and others like him did to bring the buffalo to near extinction which created food shortages for many tribes who had dependedon them for many centuries. The artist tells us through his selection of the accompanying nature motif that this buffalo -- as big and strong as he is -- is part of nature's larger and grander scheme of things so he surrounds the buffalo with five large "skystones" and a multi layered ornate nature motif on each shank. "Skystones" are what fell to earth when the clouds parted after a rain storm and revealed the blue sky. This bracelet features five more or less oval large Sleeping Beauty nugget stones arching over the bear whose average size is about 11/16ths" by ¾." The traditional Navajo foliate motif consists of overlaid leaves, coiled suns, large rain drop beads, and coiled sunrays. There are as many as four layers of nature motif designs on the heavily overlaid shanks! The exquisite cast sterling silver three dimensional buffalo is so finely detailed that you can the individual areas in his ruff and head, his eyes, ears, nostrils, mouth , and horns. He measures 1" by 7/8ths." Twisted rope overlays frame all four sides of the stone channel just inside the bracelet's hand stamped overlaid edges from shank to shank. Overlays are designs created from separate sheets of sterling silver, removed, and then bonded to the surface, in this case, to the bracelet's stone channel. The foliate nature motif represents and cycles of nature that grow and sustain all life. This mammoth bracelet is 3" wide in the center and gradually tapers to 2 and 1/8th" in width at both shanks. It has an inside measurement of 6 and 7/8ths" with a very carefully adjustable opening gap of 1½" making it suitable for wrists that are 8¼" to no more than 8½" in circumference. The prolific Sleeping Beauty turquoise mine is located in east central Arizona. Navajo artist Lorenzo Yazzie created this bracelet, and his hallmark and sterling stamp are on the back.
