SquareTrade © AP6.0 LONGINES VINTAGE 3 REGISTER CHRONOGRAPH 13ZN "12" We feel very fortunate to have acquired this, the very rarest of vintage Longines chronographs, featuring the Longines Caliber 13ZN "12". A little background on the normal 13ZN Flyback Caliber: Longines developed this movement in 1936, which was the first ever to feature a chronograph with flyback function. It would become one of the most collectable of all chronographs, and recent auctions and prices reflect how desirable these watches have become. Longines 13ZN Flyback chronographs are extremely rare, especially in original condition, and are considered "grail" watches by many collectors. What we have here is even rarer, much rarer; A Longines Chronograph, from circa 1938, with the caliber 13ZN "12"; It is one of the very few Longines in existence with the cal 13ZN-12, which, instead of the flyback function, features 3-registers on the dial, with central minutes counter, instead of the usual 2-register counter! Only about 5 of these pieces have ever surfaced. The perfect original silverish dial, which has slightly patinaed to a slight cream color, features arabic numerals in perfect condition with the original luminous, as well as the original hands in equal condition, simply stunning! In addition to the hour and minutes hand, two additional hands are present, one in red, which is the chronograph central minutes indicator, and the other one in blued steel, which is the chronograph - seconds hand. The 2 small sub-registers are for the seconds, at 9 o' clock, and 12-hour counter at 3 o clock. The layout and display of colors on this dial is fantastic, everything is is proportioned and balanced just right, and the hint of its age, is something, every collector will cherish in disbelief, when looking at this watch. Next, I want to point out the beautifully finished, oversized and nicely curved steel case, which measures 40 mm across, excluding the winding crown. The satin and mirror polished case tapers down to 20 mm's at the lugs. This is a large and heavy watch, which features a plethora of subtle and understated details in the finish and case design, the sum of which truly result in a magnificently crafted piece of sculpted art, which you will appreciate immediately, once you hold this watch in your hands! This extra-large watch, by 1930's /40's standards, has a slightly curved profile, with the lugs contouring to fit even a small wrist comfortably, ensuring a proper fit, keeping the watch from sliding from one side of your wrist to the other. It is very comfortable to wear, regardless of your wrist size. The design is remarkable and well ahead of its time. It is a familiar design, which has inspired many modern watches; amazing that this piece was created nearly 70 years ago. The screwback caseback shows no tool marks, with 2 sets of numbers engraved, serial# and "177", which is also engraved underneath one of the top lugs. The movement, again, is the unequalled, legendary manual wind, 17 jewel Longines cal 13ZN 12, with 12 hour sub register and central minutes counter for the chronograph. The condition matches the rest of the watch, everything works as it should and all counters reset properly. Even more amazing, considering the overall condition of this Longines; We rarely see a vintage watch of this kind in such outstanding original condition; the finish appears original; the edges are crisp and there are no scratches or dings. Nothing appears to have been "polished" off or down. It is in absolutely mint + condition. This collector's dream will be delivered on a padded, burgundy alligator strap.
